Your How-To Guide to Pet Safety This Thanksgiving

September 30, 2016

Our pets are often very much a part of our families. So when it comes to Thanksgiving, we want to make sure they feel the warmth, love and affection the holiday season affords. Part of that is making sure they’re safe and sound.

With guests coming and going, and the kitchen in full swing, it’s easy to loose track of where food is placed, where garbage is left and who might slip your furry friend an unapproved treat on the sly.

Unfortunately, many of the foods we enjoy on Thanksgiving don’t make the cut for “Petsgiving.” Here’s a list of the foods and materials to keep away from your pets this holiday season (and all seasons!). Make sure to keep your trashcans covered and remind guests to close lids and keep foods out of paw’s reach!

  • Alcohol
  • Broccoli
  • Hops (often used in sauces or in brewing beer)
  • Green-looking potatoes
  • Coffee and tea
  • Raisins
  • Fruit pits, stones and seeds
  • Rhubarb leaves
  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Chocolate
  • Potato peelings
  • Xylitol sweetener (often found in candies, mints and gum)
  • Grapes
  • Yeast dough
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Cigarettes, cigars and tobacco
  • Moldy or spoiled food
