    A nutrient-packed wellness broth you can make with leftover turkey (or chicken) carcass bones


  • 1 ½ pounds bones you can use a chicken carcass, chicken necks and backs, beef bones, lamb bones, etc
  • 4 quarts filtered water
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 onion quartered
  • 2 carrots cut into large chunks
  • 2 stalks celery cut into large chunks

  1. If you are using beef or lamb bones, it is best to roast them in the oven first (45-60 minutes) for the best flavor.
  2. Place bones in a large stockpot or a slow cooker and cover with filtered water (you may not use all 4 quarts) and add the vinegar (this helps extract the minerals from the bones).
  3. Add the onion, carrots, and celery and bring to a boil, skimming the foam that rises to the top with a large spoon.
  4. Reduce heat to a low simmer and cook for at least 8 hours, up to 48 hours (shorter time for chicken bones, longer time for beef bones).
  5. During the first few hours of simmering, check often to remove any foam that rises to the surface.
  6. Add salt, pepper, garlic, and other fresh herbs/spices during the last hour of cook time.
  7. Remove from heat (or turn off slow cooker) and let cool slightly.
  8. Strain broth through a fine mesh sieve and discard the solids.

When cool enough, store in large jars. Homemade bone broth will keep for 3 days in the refrigerator or up to 6 months in the freezer. You can also freeze broth in ice cube trays and then transfer to a sealed container so you always have convenient smaller servings on hand.

Other Optional Ingredients: Sea salt, peppercorns, garlic cloves, bay leaves, and any additional herbs or spices for flavor
